Yes, Author Book Signings Still Happen

3 min read

Much changed during the coronavirus pandemic, and some canceled things have never returned, but book signings aren’t one of them. As soon as book marketing services returned to normal, author events and signings resumed, often in bookstores. Allowing fans to meet authors and having their books signed has enduring appeal. It’s also an excellent way to generate book sales and draw customer traffic to brick-and-mortar stores. If you’ve written a book and are planning your launch marketing program, you may want to consider signings. Bookstores are often happy to host them.

Once you’ve confirmed a book signing and have it on your calendar, begin work promoting it. There’s every reason to post about it on social media, list it on your website, and write a post to your blog if you have one. It’s also helpful if the store or venue where you’ll be appearing promotes to its followers as well. Sending an email to your list with a “save the date” is also a wise way to kick off your event promotion. Depending on the location, there may be news organizations and websites that publish calendar listings. It’s helpful to be included in those when you can; every listing helps in the long run.

Even though we live in a digital world, traditional promotional methods like posters and printed items continue to have value. The goal is to reach people interested in you, your book, and the event. If you can post a flyer in local stores or other high-traffic spots, you’ll gain more people. Remember that marketing is incremental, and you’re trying to make multiple impressions on prospective attendees. Besides your name, the date, and location, you may want to include your book’s cover to attract attention and familiarize people with it. Take a look at what other authors are doing as inspiration.

Most authors’ appearances today, including book signings, include a brief presentation or remarks at the beginning. Things nearly always go better when they are planned, so give your remarks some consideration. If you have things to show during your talk, projecting slides or video can be helpful. You’re trying to make a good impression and help people feel it was a wise decision to attend. Make sure also to inquire about book quantities. If the bookstore inventory is low, you should bring extra copies of your book so they don’t run out. People need to buy copies for you to sign.
